While we live in Southern California and having freezing fluids cause damage to our boats is rare, There are some things you can do to help assure your boat will be ready go whenever you need it. We generally do not take our boats out of commission for a number of months as our weather can turn summer like at any time. Because of chance of needing your boat at any time we recommend winterizing for the off-season with these tips:
Adding Fuel Stabilizer is a good idea as you may find your boat sitting without movement or the engine running for extended periods of time. Fuel Stabilizers will help to lessen gum accumulation and water build up. Gum build up can cause gum to clog jets on smaller engines and injectors on larger engines. Water in your fuel can accumulate due to condensation and separate from untreated fuel causing corrosion and damages well beyond the low cost of adding a fuel stabilizer.
If storing out of the water, either at your home or a storage facility, make sure your boat has sufficient battery charge. Running a battery charger / conditioner will help your batteries last much longer and with our winter rains you still need to be ready to purge water in the bilge.
Change Lower Unit gear oil. This is usually only needed once per season and in the off-season is a perfect time to take advantage of this relatively simple maintenance task.
Review lines for cracking or wear. Lines include both fuel and electrical.
Don't wait till spring to get that annual tune up as there will be less available times we can service your engine. Or if you want to schedule a service for later in the year, give us a call of book using our scheduling form.
Inboards are very easy to maintain in the off-season. Now could be a good time to change the oil, spark plugs and other basic tuneup items. While Orange County Outboards is the "Outboard Motor Specialists" in Orange County and neighboring cities, we can also do maintenance on Inboards. Set up a Service Appointment using our online form and we'll be glad to help assure your boat is ready to go whenever you are. Or give us a call at (949) 290-2799 to find out more on how we can help keep your boat in perfect operating condition.
Check your Stern Drive housing for any barnacles or other critter or plant life making their home in your Stern Drive.
Now is a good time to check the rubber boot between the transom and engine. Look for small holes and general condition of the rubber. If there are signs of damage and wear, now is the time to replace this unit.
